Bastrop County Spring Break Guide - 2012

Here are some great ideas of how to keep your kids busy over Spring Break this year in Bastrop County. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it's a good place to start!

Events and Camps:
  • Break into Spring Break--Monday, March 12th, 1pm-4pm at Bob Bryant Park, located at 600 Charles Blvd. in Bastrop. Arts & crafts, games, and fun activities for kids of all ages! Sponsored by the Bastrop YMCA.
  • "Be Active!"--Monday, March 12th, 10am-12pm, Elgin memorial Park pavillion. Dance and Fun Bus!
  • Bike Safety Rodeo--Monday, March 12th, 1-4pm, and Wednesday, March 14th, 9am-12pm, at Elgin High School.
  • McKinney Roughs Nature & Science Camp--March 13th-17th, morning camp 9am-12:30pm, afternoon camp 1pm-4:30pm, at Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa. For children ages 7-12. $80/session or $150 all day. All camps include field-based scientific investigations that encourage campers to inquire and explore the natural world using scientific tools like insect nets, binoculars, hand l...enses, compasses or microscopes. Each day’s camp will revolve around a theme and each camper will come to appreciate the natural resources of central Texas. Morning camp activities will not be the same as afternoon camp activities.   • Elgin Arbor Day!--Tuesday, March 13th, meet at Elgin Public Library at 9:30am. Bus Tour of Evergreen Farms, then lunch will be provided at the library at 11:30am. Pick up at 12:00pm. Permission slip required.
  • "Paintastic" Event--Tuesday, March 13th, 5-7pm, at Elgin Public Library. Hand/finger painting, watercolors, acrylics, drawing and coloring.
  • Best of Bastrop Festival--Wednesday, March 14th, 12pm-4pm, at Bastrop State Park. Spend the afternoon outside and explore the best of what Bastrop State Park has to offer! Try your hand at geocaching, take a hike with a ranger, discover the wildlife that make their homes here, and maybe even meet a Houston toad! Call (512) 237-2241 for more info.
  • "Be Strong! Protect Yourself!"--Wednesday, March 16th, 1-3pm, at Elgin Public Library. Self-Defense/Martial Arts Workshop (1-2pm) and Fire Safety Workshop presented by the Elgin Fire Department (2-3pm).
  • "Outdoor Adventures"--Wednesday, March 16th, 6-8pm, at Elgin Memorial Park. Outdoor education, camping preparation tools, and other activities!
  • Bastrop Youth Arts Day--Thursday, March 15th, 3 sessions (9-10am, 10:30-11:30am, and 12pm-1pm), at the Lumberyard Music Hall, located at 1109 Main Street in Bastrop. Open to children from 2nd-5th grade. The Bastrop Fine Arts Guild will provide instructors to help children express themselves through painting, using a variety of mediums from crayons to water colors and even collage-making. Butcher paper will be provided as the canvas and all art supplies will be provided on site. Space is extremely limited so please call Carolyn Wiginton at (512) 845-8740 to reserve a spot today.
  • Tye Dye Shoelace Jewelry--Thursday, March 15th, 1-3pm, at Elgin Public Library. Snack provided.
  • Family Movie Night--Thursday, March 15th, 6pm, at Elgin Public Library. Bring the family for a special showing of "Dolphin Tale." Snacks available.
  • Kite Making Workshop--Friday, March 16th, 1-2pm and 2-3pm. Classes limited to 35 students. Sign-up required. Make a kite to take to the kite fair.
  • Elgin's Got Talent--Saturday, March 17th, 10am-2pm, at Veteran's Memorial Park in Elgin. River Valley Farmers Market, food, arts & crafts, Ms. Poppy the clown, kid's activities, and more! To sign up for the Talent Show, call Melinda Torres at (512) 281-5678.
  • Sherwood Forest Faire--Saturday, March 17th, and Sunday, March 18th, 10am-7pm, located at 1883 Old Hwy 20 in McDade. Visit Sherwood Forest Faire for a medieval-themed show with over 100 musical, comedic and dramatic performances per day, including a full-contact heavy armor joust, falconry show, feasts, and more - all in period costume and character. Bring the kids to Once Upon a Time, a place in Sherwood Forest made especially for kids! All kinds of magical creatures and fairy-tales come to life in this 2 acre section of the woods. Your wee ones can join us at the daily Faery Tea Party (which takes place at the Chess Board) and then frolic in the play castle. All day long there are games, shows, food, and more! Entertainment is provided for imaginations of all ages, with interactive puppet shows, sing-a-longs, faery tea parties (once per day), and fantastic jugglers on three stages dedicated to kid-centered fun.
