Summer Camp & Activity Guide - 2012


Here is an alphabetical list of all of the Summer Camps and Activities in Bastrop County for Summer 2012. It may not be a comprehensive list, but it's a really good start! All-Sports Camp
All-Sports Camp, hosted by the Smithville PARD, will provide kids a unique opportunity to experience a variety of recreational activities while learning sportsmanship, skills, and a better understanding of the sports.

Date: June 18th-22nd
Time: 8am-12pm, campers may be dropped off as early as 7:30am and must be picked up by 12:30pm; Friday is an extended day from 8am-4pm

British Soccer Camp- Elgin

British Soccer Camps provide players of all ages and abilities with the rare opportunity to receive high-level soccer coaching from a team of international experts. Each day includes individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, small-sided games, coached scrimmages, and a daily tournament. Equally important, the Challenger coaching staff provides your child with lessons in respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and leadership. Camp programs include a free ball and shirt and a free British Soccer jersey for on line registrations 45 days prior to camp!

Camp Wilderness Ridge

Wilderness Ridge is a Christ-centered camping experience that strives to change lives through Christian education and by utilizing a wilderness camping experience. Wilderness Ridge sumer camps are overnight camps.

McKinney Roughs Nature Camp

Campers investigate ponds, meadows, forests and the Colorado River using tools like binoculars, insect nets, dip nets, and more. Register your child for the whole summer and they will experience something new each week. McKinney Roughs Nature Camp offers three camps based on age. Sherwood Forest Summer Camp

Bringing the trades and skills od the Renaissance back to life! Lessons in traditional crafts and skills such as blacksmithing, archery, horsemanship, pottery, stained glass making, woodworking, leatherworking, and swordplay. Classes are held in a 23-acre medieval village, adding a special ambiance that your child will never forget!

YMCA: Bastrop Recreational Programs

Art with a Twist- Horsin' Around
In this class, students will explore their creativity every Tuesday in June, specifically focusing on horse artwork. Every week will start off with a pencil sketch warm-up. From there, students will create with different mixed media including acrylic, watercolor, wire and metal, as well as other media each week. Education on Franz Marc, best known for his "Blue Horse," will be taught. Students will also get a chance to paint their own "Blue Horse."

In this class, students will explore their creativity every Thursday in July, specifically focusing on pop art. Students will explore different types of media each week such as acrylic, watercolor, clay, as well as other types of mixed media. Education on Andy Warhol will be taught, and students will get to paint their own version of his "Campbell's Soup I."

Babysitting Safety Course and CPR Certification
Boys and Girls Welcome! The Babysitting Safety Course is designed to train teenagers to become safe and effective babysitters. It is geared toward youth, ages 12+. This will be a fun, informative, and interactive course. Teens will learn the basics of starting a business and caring for a child or infant. Safety issues for the sitter and children will be strongly emphasized. Teens will learn basic first aid care, home and play safety, how to prevent an accident, and how to handle an emergency situation. On the second day of class, students will learn how to do CPR and become officially certified. The course instructor is Karen Shirk, RN , BSN, of Quality CPR & More. She is a nurse with 17 years of critical care experience and brings real world experience to the class. The Babysitting Safety Course will be followed by a CPR Certification class about two weeks later. This will offer students with an opportunity to further their babysitting skills.

Chef Program
Local Chefs will give program about the importance of the proper nutrition and then show them how to make a nutritious snack. The children will actually make it and enjoy the treat. Afterward they will participate in a craft project about nutrition.

Educational FUN! For Goodness Snakes!
Students will learn all about snakes in this 3-hour long class, including live demonstrations with non-venomous snakes and educational facts and fun! After learning all about snakes, students will get an opportunity to do painted snake pottery, move like a snake, and create their own snake snack!

Kinder Dance
This 45-minute class for beginners, ages 3 to 5 years-old, introduces basic movement and dance technique, as well as creativity with movement and music. On the last day of class, parents are invited to observe the class. The class is open to boys and girls. Instructor: Molly Ryan, 19 years of Ballet and Modern Dance training, also a Minor in Dance Performance.

Paint Your Own Pottery: Paint Your Own Tiles
In this class, students will get a chance to express their creativity through painting their own pottery. Students will receive four 4-inch by 4-inch tiles to paint. The tiles will be fired, and they will be food safe and non-toxic. Fired pieces will be available to be picked up one week after the class. This course will be taught by Lea Cundy. Lea is well-known in Bastrop for her beautiful bluebonnet and wildflower-painted pottery. Lea has a lot of experience teaching art to youth. This will be a great opportunity for students to create their own work of art!

Youth Golf Clinic
Wolfdancer Golf Club, The Rotary Club of Cedar Creek, and BISD will partner with the Y to administer Junior Golf Clinic during the summer of 2012 for students ages 7-12. These clinics will be unique as they will be a medium to mentor kids through the game of golf. Not only will the kids learn about the game of golf, they will also learn life skills and core values that will be tied into each class.

Zumbatonic
Designed exclusively for kids, Zumbatomic classes are rockin', high-energy fitness-parties packed with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and more. Parents love Zumbatomic because of the effects it has on kids, increasing their focus and self-confidence, boosting metabolism and enhancing coordination. Zumbatomic rounds out family fitness goals by giving parents a great reason to head to the gym for themselves, for their kids, for a totally fun family experience. Instructor: Priscilla Knopik.
