Veterans Memorial Park Fundraiser - 2012

Smithville's Veterans Memorial Park Fundraiser is going on this weekend, May 18th-21st. There will be fun for the whole family with a BBQ Cook-Off, Disc Golf at Dusk Doubles Tournament, Washers, Horseshoes, Kickball, and Volleyball Tournaments, Bed Races, Live Auction, Parade, and MORE! You can purchase lunch plates for $10 each, and there will be a Live Concert with headliner Cory Morrow beginning at 5pm. Tickets start at $20. For a detailed schedule of events, check out these flyers:

This unique park project for the city of Smithville will combine a children’s water recreation area/splash pad and a memorial space and monument to honor the fallen heroes of Bastrop County. Mayor Bunte and Patti Patton Bader, founder of Soldier’s Angels, a non-profit organization that supports tens of thousands of American military personnel across the globe with care packages from home, developed the concept for the park after a conversation about the fallen heroes from Smithville and the Bastrop County area. The community has lost more soldiers, for its size, than any other during the recent fight for freedom. The concept for a children’s area as part of the memorial came from families of the fallen who expressed the desire to have youthful energy and joy as part of a tribute to soldiers who fell in the fight for freedom.

The memorial will pay tribute to the five Smithville-area soldiers for whom this project was conceived:

* Sgt. Mario Rodriguez, Jr. (June 11, 2010 Afghanistan)
* Lance Cpl. Cody R. Stanley (October 28, 2009 Afghanistan)
* Spc. Joshua Ray Farris (July 9, 2009 Afghanistan)
* Captain Joshua Meadows (September 5, 2009 Afghanistan)
* Pfc. Tina Marie Priest (March 1, 2006 Taji, Iraq)

Bastrop County will have a special place of honor for the names of the fallen, and Texas heroes from the past 100 years of wars will be immortalized in the 10-foot-high brick wall with special plaques. In addition, there will be a beautiful angel sculpture by artist Bill McGlaun that will be a major focal point in the park.

Even if you can't make it to the fundraiser this weekend, you can make a donation or find more information on how to get involved here.
