Empty Bowl Project - 2013

Get your spoons ready, because preparations for the Empty Bowl Project are in full swing! The Empty Bowl Project is one of the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry's annual fundraising events that helps combat hunger in Bastrop County by raising funds (and awareness!) for the local food pantry. This year, the event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23rd, from 11am-1:30pm at the Bastrop High School cafeteria, located at 1614 Chambers Street in Bastrop.

Here's the scoop (pun intended!)... Local restaurants and caterers will prepare their best soup dish, and a panel of celebrity judges will tag a winner in each class—soup, stew, or chili—while attendees vote on their "fan favorite." When you get there, you'll get a souvenir hand-decorated pottery bowl, created by B.I.S.D. art students, as well as unlimited soup tastings, drinks, and dessert. Plus, there will be a silent auction of items donated by Bastrop County artists and live music by Terry Lyne and HWY South.

You could bid on this hand painted bowl autographed by Rachel Ray!

My family and I went last year, and we had a great time!

Here are some of the local restaurants/caterers that will be competing for your vote:
  • Anita's Café
  • Aunt Lou's Catering
  • The Back Door Café
  • Bassano's Italian Restaurant
  • Bastrop Brewhouse
  • Brenda's 1441 Café
  • Cedar’s Mediterranean Grill
  • Chili's, Deli Depot
  • Gracie's (The Grace Miller Restaurant)
  • Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa
  • Li’l Mexican Garden
  • Maxine’s on Main
  • Meyers Smokehouse
  • Murphy's Steakhouse
  • My Little Things Catering
  • Olde World Bakery
  • The Roadhouse
  • Viejos Tacos y Tequila

All proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships for this event will go toward funding the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry and Support Center, providing a lifeline to County residents living in poverty. According to Food Pantry Executive Director Tresha Silva, this event is a major focus of the Pantry’s fundraising efforts, which last year translated into 305,016 pounds of nutritious food distributed to over 14,714 households and into a broad array of education and support services to the elderly and those in need.

"A sluggish economy, persistent high unemployment and the Labor Day fires all have contributed to a growing need for Pantry services and have increasingly strained the Pantry’s limited resources," Silva said. "We need a really good turnout at this event to sustain the good work that the Pantry does."

So, do your part to help fight hunger, and make plans to attend the Empty Bowl Project! Tickets are $20/person, and children 12 and under eat FREE. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the Food Pantry (1201 Pine), the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce (927 Main), or the Sugar Shack (114 Loop 150 W).
