Bastrop Producers Market

by Angela Castillo

If you haven’t stopped at the Bastrop Producers Market, located at 977 Hwy 71 between FM 20 and Hwy 21, you really ought to. The red metal building may look modest from the outside, but when you step inside you are in for a treat. Long isles of locally produced fruits, vegetables, farm fresh meats, honey, and many other organic and freshly grown foods are available for purchase.

The market offers many gluten-free and organic products, including dry goods.

I'm sorry to say it took me far too long to visit the market, simply because I didn’t bother to read the sign outside! I thought it was a traditional farmers market and only open on the weekends. I was so wrong! The market is actually open Tuesday through Friday from 11am-6pm, Saturday from 9am-6pm, and Sunday from 12pm-5pm. Since it’s located on the frontage road of 71, it’s easy to swing by on the way home from Austin or San Marcos.

Many dairy products and farm fresh items can be found, including eggs.

Besides carrying many types of food (including yard eggs), the market also carries herbs from Tai Chi People Herb Co., locally produced soaps and lip balms, Fara Coffee, pecan oil from Kinlock Plantation Products, fresh baked goods from Simply Delicious and a lovely array of hand-made gifts, many made from repurposed and recycled items. Some of the artisans represented include Dishyblossoms (yard art produced from vintage dishes) and FairyGirl Photo, offering greeting cards and handmade jewelry.

Lovely jewelry is available from many local artists.

According to the Market’s co-owner, Jim McCraken, the reason he and co-owner, Jaquie Gates, opened the market nearly five years ago was twofold. To make a contribution to the community and to make a living. “I lost faith in the conventional food system,” McCraken stated. When asked why he chose Bastrop, he smiled. “Because we live here,” he said.

A fully equipped commercial kitchen is available for rent.

The Bastrop Producers Market currently carries products from over 120 vendors. They are open to new vendors as long as the items are produced locally. Last year, they paid out $92,527.00 to the community. They also offer a full commercial kitchen to bakers to rent for $9.00/hour. Please help out the market (and all the vendors) by liking their page on facebook and paying them a visit! For more information, you can contact them at (512) 308-9989.
