Top 10+ Things to Do This Weekend (Mar 22-24, 2013)


Instead of our normal Top 10 this week, there was so much going on, that it became the Top 22!!! I guess now that spring has sprung, everyone wants to play!

1. Friends of the Bastrop Public Library Community Book Sale - Friday & Saturday, Mar. 22nd-23rd, 10am-4pm at the Bastrop Public Library, located at 110 Church Street in downtown Bastrop.

2. Emile Elementary PTA Spring Carnival - Friday, March 22nd, 5:30-7:30pm at Emile Elementary, located at 601 MLK, Jr. Drive in Bastrop. There will be fun games, a dunk tank, cotton candy, Dickey's BBQ, and more!

3. Moongazing - Friday, March 22nd, 8:00-8:30pm at Bastrop State Park. Take a closer look at the surface of the moon through a specially-equipped telescope, and discover the role this satellite of Earth plays in our everyday lives. FREE after park entry fees. Click here for more info.

4. The Outdoor Marketplace 1-Year Anniversary Celebration - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 8am-6pm at The Outdoor Marketplace, located at 1067 Hwy 71 W in Bastrop/Cedar Creek. Fresh food off the grill, face painting, photos with the Easter Bunny ($15), live music from 11am-3pm, cupcakes from Simply Sweet, and more!

5. Kids Day - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 9-11am at the Living Room Bookstore, located at 301 Hwy 71 W in Bastrop. There will be snacks, games, crafts, story time, and more! Plus, the first 25 kids get goody bags!

6. Community Assistance and Health Fair - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 9am-12pm at Bastrop High School Cafeteria. Learn about all of the health and human services Bastrop has to offer! Sponsored by Bastrop Community Assistance in partnership with Community in Schools.

7. Discover the Lost Pines Hike - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 10am-2pm at Bastrop State Park. Join a Master Naturalist for a walk through the park and explore the history, flora and fauna that make Bastrop State Park unique. FREE after park entry fees. Click here for more info.

8. Chasing After Picky Eaters - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 10am-2pm at Buescher State Park in Smithville. Go on a 1-mile hike and search for the picky eaters of the park: birds, butterflies and other critters. FREE after park entry fees. Click here for more info.

9. Spring Festival - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 10am-2pm at Cedar Creek United Methodist Church, located at FM 535 in Cedar Creek. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt, games & prizes, a bounce house, "Thomas the Train" rides, Child ID Safety Program, Book Sale, Plant Sale, Bake Sale, Basketball Shoot (around 11am), and a Basket Auction at 12pm. Plus, a BBQ lunch will be available beginning at 11am. BBQ plates are $8/adult and $4/child. Admission is FREE!

10. Spring Plant Extravaganza - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 10am-2pm at Bastrop 1832 Farmers Market, located at 1302 Chestnut Street in downtown Bastrop. Vegetable plants (tomato, pepper, and squash), bedding plants, herb plants, trees, shrubs, and ornamentals, all grown locally!

11. Tractor Races - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 10am-2pm at Sears, located at 735 Old Austin Hwy in Bastrop, next to the Texas Boot Company. Each person gets one practice run, and the "King of the Hill" award will go to the person with the fastest time through the course. Fun!!!

12. Kids Craft Saturday - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 10am-5pm at Creative Treasures, located at 976 Hwy 71 E in Bastrop. Kids will make a dish rag bunny and have a special Easter treat. $5/person.

13. Sherwood Forest Faire - Saturday & Sunday, Mar. 23rd & 24th, 10am-7pm at the Sherwood Forest Faire festival grounds, located at 1883 Old Hwy 20 in McDade. Visit Sherwood Forest Faire for a medieval-themed show with over 100 musical, comedic and dramatic performances per day, including a full-contact heavy armor joust, falconry show, feasts, and wine tastings - all in period costume and character.

14. A Day in the Life of a CCC Boy - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 11am-12pm at Buescher State Park in Smithville. Explore the daily life of one of the “boys” who built the park. See the tools they used, hear about the pranks they pulled and tour several Civilian Conservation Corps buildings. Meet at the Lakeview Picnic Pavilion. FREE after park entry fees. 15. Easter Bunny! - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 12-3pm at the Sugar Shack, located at 114 Loop 150 W in Bastrop. Photos are FREE, but you must bring your own camera.

16. Shine!FEST - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 12-6pm at Elgin Memorial Park, located at 1127 N. Main Street in downtown Elgin. Christian Music Festival featuring Kindred, Ricky Russ and the 180 Band, Tom Cottar, 10th Leper, BossTon, Gritty, Livin Epistlez, Precious, Rachal Keagy, Ben Carter, and Chad Chaney. Plus, there will be kids' activities, including train rides, a water slide, dunking booth, chalk art, and more! Admission is FREE! Click here for more info.

17. Rose Garden Village Grand Opening Celebration - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 1-6pm at Rose Garden Village, located at 116 S. Lentz Street in Red Rock. Enjoy refreshments, s'mores, and an afternoon of country sunshine. Tour both properties: The Lone Oak Inn (wedding venue) and Buckner Manor Bed & Breakfast. Also, you'll get to sample the wares of some of Bastrop County's top wedding professionals, including Brenda Abbott Floral Design, Maxine's on Main Catering, and Sleeping Owl Photography.

18. Wildflower Walk - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 4-6pm at Bastrop State Park. This easy backcountry hike offers exceptional wildflower and wildlife viewing. FREE after park entry fees. Click here for more info.

19. Cure on the Colorado - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 5-9pm at Vernon L. Richards Riverbend Park in Smithville. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the gate. Admission to Cure on the Colorado includes an evening of blues with the award-winning Peterson Brothers Band, a buffet dinner catered by Chef John Chabot, and silent and live auctions. Proceeds benefit The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Science Park.

20. Cotton Bowl Speedway - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 5-11pm at Cotton Bowl Speedway, located at Hwy 290 and CR 202 in Paige. General admission $12, seniors $10, students, military, and children 6 & under are FREE. Races start at 7pm.

21. Calvary Episcopal School Spring Fling - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 5:30-11pm at XS Ranch (formerly Steiner Ranch), located at 1345 Sayers Road in Bastrop. Live music by the Chris Allbright Band! Meal served until 8pm. BYOB. Admission is $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

22. Give a Hoot! - Saturday, Mar. 23rd, 8:00-8:45pm at Buescher State Park in Smithville. Discover the masters of the night sky – owls!  At the amphitheater. FREE after park entry fees. Click here for more info.
