Bastrop County Boredom Busters (July 1-7, 2013)


School's out for the summer, and my kids keep saying, "I'm bored, Mom!" So, I put together a list of some of the top boredom busters in Bastrop County this week. Some are for kids, some are for adults, and some are for everyone. As a bonus, the events highlighted in green are FREE!!! Enjoy!

Monday, July 1st
  • FREE Pool- 11am-midnight at Papa Woody's Icehouse, located at 147 East Old Hwy 20 in Paige.
  • Monday Movie- 2pm at Bastrop Public Library, "The Wild"

Tuesday, July 2nd
  • Unique Antiques Dominos- 9am-4pm at Smithville Public Library. Come play dominos!
  • Family Film Festival- 9:30am at Schulman Theatres Lost Pines 8, "The Smurfs" in both 2D and 3D. Admission is only $0.50 each. Click here for more info.
  • Craft: Plastic Cup Mobiles- 10-11am at the Smithville Rec Center. $3/person.
  • Storytime/Lap Sit- 10:30am at Elgin Public Library.
  • Books & Bites Story Time- 1:15pm at Bastrop Public Library.
  • Brown Bag Movie- 6:30pm at Bastrop Public Library, "Chicken Run"

Wednesday, July 3rd
  • Little Bookworms Storytime- 10:30-11:30am at Smithville Public Library.
  • Story Time/Story Time Plus- 10:30am-12pm at Bastrop Public Library.
  • Craft Day- 4:30pm at Elgin Public Library.
  • Chalk It Up! Sidewalk Art Contest- 6:00-7:30pm at Veterans' Memorial Park in Elgin
  • Bingo- 7:30pm at the Rockne VFW.
  • Movie in the Park- Starts at dusk in Elgin Memorial Park, "Kicking & Screaming"
  • Karaoke- 8pm at the Bastrop Brewhouse, located in the Crossing at 601 Chestnut Street in Bastrop.
  • Karaoke- 8pm at Papa Woody's Icehouse, located at 147 East Old Hwy 20 in Paige.

Thursday, July 4th
  • Elgin's People’s Patriotic Fourth of July Parade: Push, Pedal, Pull and Pets- Parade line-up begins at 9am in downtown Elgin, and the parade starts at 10am. Parade route is Main Street from City Hall to the Veterans’ Memorial Park. All non-motorized entries are accepted. Food and fun follow the parade with a short program and a Soap Box Derby exhibition by the local Cub Scouts.
  • FREE Hot Dogs at the Rockne VFW!
  • Trivia Tournament- 8-11pm at the Bastrop Brewhouse, located in the Crossing at 601 Chestnut Street in Bastrop.

Friday, July 5th
  • Story Time/Story Time Plus- 10:30am-12pm at Bastrop Public Library.
  • Fish Fry- 5:30-8:30pm at the Elgin VFW, located at 118 Old Sayers Rd in Elgin.
  • Open Mic Night- 7-9pm at The Owl Wine Bar & Home Goods Store, located at 106 N. Main Street in Elgin.
  • "Egads!" 3rd Annual Smithville Melodrama- 7:30pm at Playhouse Smithville.
  • Karaoke- 8pm at the American Legion Post 533, located at 3003 Loop 150 E in Bastrop
  • Karaoke- 8pm-12am at Cistern Country Store/Bar, located at Hwy 95 and FM 2237 in Smithville/Flatonia.
  • Night Hike- 8:30-9:30pm at Bastrop State Park. Click here for more info.
  • Karaoke- 8:30-11:30pm, Cindy's Downtown, located at 931 Main Street in Bastrop.

Saturday, July 6th
  • Elgin Flea Market Days- 7am-5pm in Elgin Memorial Park.
  • Bastrop's Pet and Pal Parade- Registration begins at 9am, Judging is from 9:45-10:30 am, and the Parade starts at 10:30am. Prizes will be awarded for best pet trick, most patriotic pet and pal, most unusual pet, best pet and owner look-alike, and best non-motorized vehicle decoration. The parade route will begin at the Courthouse, proceed down Main Street, and end at the Bastrop Opera House on Spring Street.
  • Bastrop's Patriotic Festival- Takes place in Fisherman's Park. Enjoy food, games, kiddie train, live music, and of course, fireworks. Bastrop Community Orchestra will perform at 6pm, and the Austin Symphonic Band will perform at 8pm.
  • "Egads!" 3rd Annual Smithville Melodrama- 7:30pm at Playhouse Smithville.
  • Karaoke- 9pm-12am at Quoffers Pub, located at 117 N. Main Street in Elgin.

Sunday, July 7th
  • Monthly BBQ- 12-4pm at the Bastrop VFW Post 12104, located at 1128 Hwy 21 E, Bldg. D (at FM 1441). Enjoy chicken and beef fajitas, $6/plate.
  • Karaoke- 8pm at Papa Woody's Icehouse, located at 147 East Old Hwy 20 in Paige.

Other ideas about where to take the kids to keep them entertained include Bastrop Skating Palace, Giggle N Jump, Schulman Theatres Lost Pines 8 (movies, bowling, mini golf, arcade, and pool tables), the Splash Pad in Fisherman's Park, the Bastrop State Park Pool, Elgin Municipal Pool, the Dinosaur Park, and Capital of Texas Zoo. Plus, the Bastrop YMCA has a lot of fun activities to keep kids from being bored this summer!

If all else fails, just tell them to go outside and play in the sprinkler and then give them a popsicle. Works every time.
