Veteran's Weekend Car & Truck Show - 2013

Looks like it’s going to be a beautiful weekend to come celebrate Bastrop’s veterans at the 8th Annual Veterans Day Car & Truck Show! This is typically the city’s largest event of the year, drawing over 11,000 spectators and 250 skillfully restored vehicles to Bastrop’s vibrant historic downtown area. Here's a few photos of some classic beauties from previous years (photos by Sleeping Owl Photography)...

Festivities kick off Friday night (Nov. 8th) with a drive-in movie at Fisherman’s Park. Enjoy oldie-but-goodie "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" on a huge outdoor screen from the comfort of your own car (audio to be broadcast for you to pick up on your car radio). Refreshments will be available, and the showing starts at dusk.

Saturday, Nov. 9th brings the main event; registration for the car show begins early that morning and runs until 10:00am. You will have lots of time to stroll down Main Street and pick out your favorite entries before the awards ceremony at 3:30pm. There will also be live music, shopping, and street vendors to keep everyone entertained at this family-friendly event.

Plus, at 1:30pm, the Bastrop Opera House will be showing the Academy Award winning film "Where Soldiers Come From."  Produced and directed by Heather Courtney, the film follows five high school friends from graduation, to their enlistment, thru their deployment to the Middle East, and how they return to civilian life.

The real highlight of the day, however, comes at 11:00am with the Veterans Ceremony. This event kicks off with a Veterans Walk led by a kilted bagpiper and members of the Bastrop High School ROTC; all veterans are asked to join in the procession. There will also be a Wall of Honor displaying information about local veterans, a fly-over performance of the Missing Man formation, and a performance of Taps. You won’t want to miss this chance to honor all those that have sacrificed so much to serve our country!

The weekend winds up on Sunday morning (Nov. 10th) with a Veterans Service at the newly opened Veterans Memorial Park in nearby Smithville. The event starts at 8:30am and is followed by a buffet breakfast at the Smithville Recreation Center (donation only). Audio recordings from Bastrop County veterans, provided by the Smithville Public Library’s StoryCorps program, will be playing during the service.

Proceeds benefit the Bastrop High School Naval Jr. ROTC, and admission to the event is free of charge. Click here for more information, or visit the event's Facebook page here. Hope to see you there!
