Food Pantry and American Idol Team Up Again

Last year, the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry rolled out the red carpet for former American Idol contestants Ruben Studdard, Tamyra Gray, Paris Bennett, and Pia Toscano to help raise funds at the annual Sounds of Sharing concert. It was an spectacular night with amazing performances by superb singers. It was so successful, in fact, that they're doing it AGAIN!

In 2013, the Sounds of Sharing concert raised $24,000.00, which allowed the Food Pantry to serve 128,000 meals to local families and individuals in need.

(Read about last year's Sounds of Sharing Concert here and here.)

This year, the Sounds of Sharing concert will take place on Saturday, Nov. 1st, beginning at 7pm at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Center for Performing Arts, located at 1401 Cedar Street in Bastrop. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased here.

The Sounds of Sharing concert will feature former "American Idol" contestants Vincent Powell, Devin Velez, and Amber Holcomb, and former contestant on NBC's "The Sing Off," Candy West, as well as the Chubby Knuckle Choir, Keith Kelso, Terry Lyn Moore and Hwy South, and Burgundy Road.

When asked about how the partnership with American Idol formed, BCEFP Executive Director, Tresha Silva answered, "[it] all begin with Mr. Ron Deshay, who is a former producer of the American Idol show. What I have learned is people are always happy to help a serious cause. No one believes that people should be experiencing hunger - not here, not anywhere."

Deshay grew up in Bastrop and approached Silva last year with the idea of adding celebrity talent to the concert. Judging by the amount of money raised for the Food Pantry and the community turnout, it was a terrific idea!

The Food Pantry does a lot to help combat hunger in Bastrop County. Here are a few of the programs they offer, from providing food and personal items during emergency situations to providing education, counseling, and referrals:
  • Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP)
  • Brown Bag Program
  • Open Arms Program
  • Whole Grains Program
  • Fresh Food for Families Program
  • Stronger Families Today Program (SFT)

Even if you can't make it to the concert, you can still help. According to Silva, it's simple. "Donate, Donate, Donate - your time, talents, and resources. Battling hunger is a community effort, not just a Food Pantry effort. I am glad to live in a community that cares."

It's not to late to be a sponsor of the 2014 Sounds of Sharing concert! Sponsorship levels are as follows: $250 - "Grower" gets two tickets; $500 - "Harvester" gets four tickets; $1250 - "Nourisher" gets six tickets. All sponsors, regardless of the amount, will be recognized on the BCEFP website, in social media leading up to the sponsored event, and during the sponsored event. Please email info@bastropfoodpantry.org for more information.
