Things to Do in January - 2015


There are a lot of really fun events coming up this next month in Bastrop County! Here's your sneak peek at the January 2015 calendar of events. Click on the links for more information about each event.

Jan. 2nd - First Friday Art Walk, 5:30-8:30pm in downtown Bastrop. Art, food, shopping, live music, and more. FREE!

Jan. 2nd - Game Night & Open Mic, 7-10pm at The Owl Wine Bar and Home Goods Store, located at 106 N. Main Street in Elgin. FREE!

Jan. 7th - The Front Room Wine Bar Grand Opening, 7-9pm at 116 Main Street in Smithville. Enjoy wine, beer, appetizers, and more. FREE!

Jan. 8th - Sip, Shop, & Stroll, 5-8pm in downtown Elgin. Live music, food, shopping, and more. FREE!

Jan. 8th - "Peter Pan" 7-9pm at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Center for the Performing Arts (PAC), located at 1401 Cedar Street in Bastrop. Performed by Cedar Creek Middle School theatre students.

Jan. 9th - Gumbo Friday, 11:30am-1:30pm at Lost Pines Toyota, located at 806 Hwy 71 W in Bastrop. Open to the public. FREE!

Jan. 9th - "Peter Pan" 7-9pm at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Center for the Performing Arts (PAC), located at 1401 Cedar Street in Bastrop. Performed by Cedar Creek Middle School theatre students.

Jan. 9th - Game Night & Open Mic, 7-10pm at The Owl Wine Bar and Home Goods Store, located at 106 N. Main Street in Elgin. FREE!

Jan. 10th-11th - Chili Cook-Off at the American Legion Post 533, located at 3003 Loop 150 E in Bastrop. Beans and Bloody Mary cook-off, raffle, silent auction, cake walk, and more.

Jan. 10th - Winter Wildlife Survival Walk, 10-11am at Buescher State Park. Explore the world of forest animals in winter on a one-mile guided hike. Free after park entry fee.

Jan. 10th - Story Time Saturday, 10:30am at Chick-fil-A, located at 721 Hwy 71 W in Bastrop. Join the Chick-fil-A cow and friends from the Bastrop Public Library for story time and a free kids icedream. FREE!

Jan. 10th - From Boys to Men, 2-3pm at Buescher State Park. Explore the lives of boys working in the Civilian Conservation Corps over 80 years ago.  On a short hike, discover several structures they built and some of the tools they used while learning about their struggle to survive into manhood during the Great Depression. Free after park entry fee.

Jan. 10th - Sounds of the Night, 7-8pm at Bastrop State Park. Learn about the sometimes spooky sounds of the forest at night and the special tools and adaptations that make nocturnal animals able to survive and thrive in the darkness. Free after park entry fee.

Jan. 12th - Pub Trivia, 7-9pm at Neighbor's Kitchen and Yard, located in the Crossing at 601 Chestnut Street in Bastrop.

Jan. 14th - Sgt. Reckless Luncheon, 12-2pm at Southside Market & Barbeque, located at 534 Hwy 71 in Bastrop. Robin Hutton, author of NY Times best selling book, "Sgt. Reckless," will share the story of the amazing horse who served her Marine Division during the Korean War. Lunch is FREE to veterans and military families. $15/person for the general public. RSVP required by Jan. 7th to admin@joyfulhorseproject.org. The Joyful Horse Project, a Bastrop-based, 501(C)3 nonprofit charity is hosting this event to raise awareness of their Veterans Equine Therapy Services (VETS) Program.

Jan. 15th - Third Thursday, 5-9pm in downtown Bastrop. Shopping, food, special sales & discounts, live music, and more. FREE!

Jan. 15th - Family Movie Night: "Frozen" 7-9pm at Elgin Public Library, located at 404 N. Main Street in Elgin. Hot dogs will be available or bring your own dinner and snacks. FREE!

Jan. 16th - Patent Pending Improv, 7:00-8:15pm at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Center for the Performing Arts (PAC) Black Box Theatre, located at 1401 Cedar Street in Bastrop. Performed by Bastrop High School theatre students. $2/person or $3/couple.

Jan. 17th - Insight BBJ Grand Opening, 12-3pm at Insight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / Team Brasa, located at 150 Settlement Drive, Suite F-1 in Bastrop. FREE!

Jan. 17th - YMCA Parent's Night Out, 5:30-9:30pm at the Bastrop Church of Christ, located at 287 FM 20 in Bastrop. $10/child for Bastrop YMCA members, $20/child for non-members. Ages 4-12. Pre-registration is required.

Jan. 17th - Rockne Livestock Boosters Steak Supper Fundraiser, 5:30-11:30pm at the Sacred Heart Holtman Hall, located at 4045 FM 535 in Rockne, behind Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Silent and live auctions, dance, and steak dinner. Steak plates are $25/person. Hamburger plates for children 18 and under are $5/person.

Jan. 17th - Skins, Skulls, and Scat, 7-8pm at Buescher State Park. Touch, feel, and see skulls, skins, and scat of the various wildlife that inhabits Buescher State Park. Test your knowledge and learn how to identify these different animals. Free after park entry fee.

Jan. 19th - Martin Luther King Jr. Walk, 10am, walk begins at MLK Park in Smithville and ends at the Smithville Recreation Center, located at 106 Gazley.

Jan. 21st - Stitch & Hoot - 7-9pm at The Owl Wine Bar and Home Goods Store, located at 106 N. Main Street in Elgin. Crochet, knit, and spin. FREE!

Jan. 22nd - "Annie Get Your Gun" 7:00-9:30pm at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Center for the Performing Arts (PAC), located at 1401 Cedar Street in Bastrop. $5/person. Purchase tickets online here. Performed by Bastrop High School theatre students.

Jan. 24th - Big Chill Adventure Race, all day at Lake Bastrop's South Shores Park. Bike, paddle, and run through the beautiful piney woods of Central Texas. Choose the sprint, tandem relay sprint, or the 12-hour race.

Discover the history and significance of the El Camino Real trail and what it was like to travel it for historic settlers and the things they brought with them that helped make Texas what it is today. Jan. 31st - Fishing with a Ranger, 2-4pm at Bastrop State Park. Learn the basics of fishing with a park ranger. Bring your own bait and borrow a pole or bring your own. Free after park entry fee.
