Day Trippin' In Houston – For FREE!

by Senobia Torres

Spring has sprung in Texas and that means – even if you can't see it yet because of all the pollen flying around – summer is just around the corner.

And vacations.

And road trips.

And spending money.

Lots of it.

The good news is you don't have to go far from home or spend a fortune to keep the family entertained this summer. There are lots of cool (and free) things you can do within a couple of hours of the Bastrop area.

As you already know, summertime in Texas is hot – really hot. Finding new ways of staying cool this summer could pose a challenge, especially once the swimming holes and water parks lose their luster.

So, to beat the heat (and save you money), here's some info about the free days at a few of Houston's most popular museums...

Children's Museum of Houston
1500 Binz Street
Houston TX 77004
Phone: (713) 522-1138

If you haven't been to The Children's Museum of Houston (CMH) in a while (or ever), you're in for a super surprise! Courtesy of recent expanisons, the museum is twice the size it used to be and encompasses more than 90,000 square feet of exhibit space.

The CMH features interactive zones for children of all ages and abilities (including a special TotZone for babies) and regularly has special presentations for holidays or different science units with lots of make-and-take projects as well.

The CMH was named the number one children's museum in the country by Parents magazine (2011) so you definitely want to check it out, if you have kids.

FREE DAY AT CMH: Thursdays 5pm-8pm

Houston Museum of Natural Science
5555 Hermann Park Drive
Houston TX 77030
Phone: (713) 639-4629

You know those really neat museums you see on TV with giant dinosaur bones and ancient artifacts and prized jewels? The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) has all that and more!

Aside from their permanent exhibits like the Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals, the Wiess Energy Hall, and Morian Hall of Paleontology (dinosaurs, yay!), the HMNS also has regular travelling exhibits as well - like the world-reknowned TITANIC! exhibition of artifacts from the famous shipwreck of 1912.

FREE DAY AT HMNS: Thursdays 2pm-5pm

The Health Museum
1515 Hermann Drive
Houston TX 77004

The Health Museum is a fantastic place to explore the inner-workings of the mind and body. Even thought it's pretty scientific, The Health Museum's exhibits are all kid-friendly anddesigned to pique their interest in biology and medical science.

The Health Musuem permanent exhibits include the Amazing Body Pavilion that features massive-sized body parts you can walk through, sit on and explore - and the McGovern 4D Theater, which creates a 3D alien-like movie depicting all the 'weird' (but real) organisims and creatures that live in and on our bodies.

Just like the HMNS, The Health Museum also has temporary and travelling exhibits that showcase various aspects of the human anatomy as well.
