Bastrop County has seen four major disasters in the past five years – the 2011 wildfire, the May/June flooding with tornadoes, and in October 2015, the Hidden Pines Fire culminating with the two massive back-to-back floods. Three of these have some state and federal assistance available, but it's not enough. Some families have lived through the upheaval of more than one of these catastrophes, and need additional assistance to get back to a normal, pre-disaster life.
These disasters affected the community as a whole, emotionally and financially. As people move away, there are less property taxes collected and consequently, less money for services. Fewer students in our schools mean less money to educate our children. And fewer residents mean lower sales to local business owners who are also raising their families in the community. These disasters caused far reaching, long-lasting ripples in every aspect of our lives.
You can help.
